Some of us got our start a wee bit earlier than the rest...(check the screen saver time on the tv. Also, note that the T.V. is going to double as an interactive white board this year...when it cooperates.)
Riley and I played night bakers and readied some Galaxy Doughnuts for First Day. We started with this recipe but varied a bit (blueberry muffin mix was a stand in for cake mix in one batch and other variations) It's well past midnight in these photos.
When the sun rose on the morning of First Day, Fisher said
"C'mon guys! Let's walk to school!"(He's witty like that)
So, they did.
We jumped into our new books, talked about our goals for the upcoming term and started completing the first few pages of individual work. In addition to the standard Readin' & 'Rithmatic we're dabbling in World History, Coding (Scratch & Java), Logic, Visual Latin, Economics, Modernity, Ancestry (Family Tree Exploration) Modern Parables, SneakyCards, Khan courses and more.
In the cafeteria, the lunch lady (me!) had prepared grilled cheese and WodFamChocSod as a treat. WodFamChocSod is short hand for World Famous Chocolate Soda as featured at Whit's End on Adventures In Odyssey. Though Riley has her hopes on getting to the 'real' Whit's End in Colorado, the WodFamChocSod was the best I could do for First Day festivities. (As one of our less-intensive summer activities, we've been listening through the Adventures In Odyssey archive when we travel. Currently, we've listened to appx 400 episodes - you can join the AIO club here. )
Our WodFamChocSods took an entire gallon of chocolate ice cream to make and tasted not very unlike a Chocolate/YooHoo Milkshake. Grab the recipe here.
Rye assigned herself a crocheting project while we explored a Modern Parable from Compass Classroom.
Before closing the day out, we all convened around a science lesson on magnets, trains and their impact on modern industry and bridge design.
First Day 2016/2017 was in the books. We headed out to the kayak launch to take a few We Survived First Day snapshots before suppertime.
